“This is in all likelihood a fairly accurate description of the harsh life children of the time were expected to endure, however there is a lightness and humour to aspects of the novel. There is also a sense of freedom and adventure that most kids these days do not get to experience in their own lives. This would make an interesting class text for year 7.
