The air show at Wings over Illawarra on the weekend was spectacular. From fighter jets to vintage biplanes, the manoeuvres and aerobatics were hair-raising. Dozens of aircraft were on display, including a Qantas 747, McDonnell Douglas Hornet, Catalina, DC4, Tiger Moth and the beautifully restored Southern Cross replica.
I was lucky enough to have a market stall at the show, selling my young adult novels, Flying through Clouds and Racing the Moon. Flying through Clouds is about Joe Riley’s dream of becoming an aviator amid the pressures and hardships of growing up in Australia in the 1930s. Racing the Moon is a prequel to Flying through Clouds and explores Joe’s experiences at a Catholic boarding school and then at a Farm Reform School on the NSW South Coast.
